Guli contacted me in August 2017 and wanted me to film their Kurdish-Arabic wedding. Since I have no boundaries I immediately said yes, despite the fact I knew nothing about traditional Kurdish or Arabic weddings. As the months went by and we arrived at wedding week I was actually panicking. Not that I would ever show it to the couple, but I was really nervous that I would mess things up, because that’s what you often do the first time you do something.
But no.
The second I walked in the door at Gulis sisters neighbours house I felt like home. Nurcan, the sister, was so open, warm, supporting and welcoming and Gulistan showed close to zero nerves. Along with her two closest friends and lots of relatives I and my second shooter Matilda was taken for a ride we will never forget and I don’t think there are enough words to describe it – I think the video does it better. And what you’ll notice is that it’s not the classic Middle East kinda wedding film, cause that’s not what they wanted. They wanted what I do. So that’s what they got.
Gulistan and Maitham – two of the most genuine people I have had the honor of meeting. May you both smile your way through life. Together.
Second shooter: Matilda Berthu.
Venue: Mor Johannes Festvåning.
Music: Tim Halperin – Forever Starts Today.
